Figs are the most luscious of these eight fruits. They are the only ones that are edible through and through, both skin and seeds. The verse which describes Eve's decision to partake of the Tree of Knowledge reads: “And the woman saw that the tree was good for food…” Maharal explains that if this were our only clue, we would know that the Tree of Knowledge was a fig tree, for its fruits are the most delectable of foods. Yet since there are other, contradictory leads, we have nine competing theories for its identity.

Figs correspond to the right ovary or testicle and pomegranates to the left. It is thus no coincidence that it is these two fruits that are bursting with seeds.
